My initial cardiac surgery training - MCh - was from Grant Medical College, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, thirty years ago.
This was preceded by training in General Surgery - MS - and graduation - MB BS - from Govt. Medical College, Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India.
I spent two very good years in private practice in Mumbai as Asst. Surgeon with Dr Nitu Mandke, a pioneer cardiac surgeon in India with great surgical prowess and excellent techniques.
After clearing my United States licensing exams, I worked at OHSU, Portland, Oregon, USA. Initially as a Fellow and later as Faculty. Here, I was trained in complex adult and pediatric heart surgeries, aortic surgery, lung volume reduction surgery and heart and lung transplantation. I was mentored by two amazing surgeons, Dr Albert Starr and Dr Adnan Cobanoglu.
To gain further experience in transplantation, I worked in Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, UK. The exposure there helped me get further trained on the surgical front. It also involved training in the medical aspects of transplant patients - preoperative workup, perioperative immunosupression, follow up endomyocardial biopsies, complex infections, etc.
I returned to USA to gain expertise in beating heart coronary surgery and mitral valve repairs at Rush-Presby Medical Center and John Stroger Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. I was exposed to robotic heart surgery using the Da Vinci system, during my tenure there.
After returning to India, I worked as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at multiple private hospitals in Mumbai - PD Hinduja Hsp, Nanavati Hsp, Saifee Hsp, Jaslok Hsp, Seven Hills Hsp, BSES Hsp, Criticare Hsp, Wockhardt Hsp. At these places, I performed almost all types of adult cardiac surgeries.
My passion for heart transplantation and zeal to set up cardiac transplant programs resulted in me travelling out of Mumbai. Thus, I worked as Full Time Consultant Cardiac & Transplant Surgeon in Columbia Asia Hospital, Bangalore, Karnataka and SPS Hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab.
Currently, I am a Visiting Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at SPS Hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab.
